How to Make an OOB image in Photoshop

I’m not sure what the OOB stands for, but I’ll assume it’s Out OF Bounds (or Borders). Anyway this is an effect that I started seeing a few years ago, and I played around with it here and there. Recently Facebook updated the look of their photo viewing lightbox, getting rid of the black background and going with a light off white with a white frame. I thought it would be a good time to take advantage of that and use the Facebook design to help sell the effect. After posting the photo to a Facebook community one of the commenters asked for a how to blog post. So here we are…

The video touches quickly on a few of the key points of how to get to the result of this effect. Trying to keep the video to a manageable length means I breezed over some of the finer points. If you have any questions feel free to post them in the comments and I will address them as best I can.
